Home-Based Food Business

A practical guide for operators who make kuih (traditional cakes and sweets), cakes, sambal, pastes, frozen food and made-to-order dishes, and for those who sell food through digital platforms.

Important note: This ManaHalal guide is educational material. It is not an approval letter from JAKIM/JAIN/MAIN (the state Islamic religious departments and councils), a PBT (local authority) licence or a KKM (Ministry of Health) listing. The scope and eligibility for certification are assessed based on the actual operation, premises, documents and current rulings. The KKM Home-Based Food listing is not the SPHM (Sijil Pengesahan Halal Malaysia, the Malaysia Halal Certificate) and does not allow the use of the Malaysian halal logo.

Learning path

Learning path for a home-based food businessStarting from a home-based business, check SSM and PBT approval, then FoSIM and food safety. Apply for the KKM listing if wanted, and the SPHM eligibility check follows. If the home premises are suitable, build the IHCS and records and apply on MYeHALAL. If not yet suitable, consider a commercial kitchen or OEM before the IHCS. Finally, the audit and the authority's decision.YesNot yet

Three different statuses

  1. Registered with FoSIM KKM: the obligation to register food premises for food operations that sell; it does not mean you are listed under Home-Based Food or halal certified.
  2. Listed under KKM Home-Based Food: a specific food safety programme; it is not the SPHM.
  3. Holding the SPHM: halal certification for the actual scope approved by JAKIM/JAIN/MAIN; it is not automatic for all products or premises.
